Sunday so far

I fell asleep around 1:30 or 2:00 a.m. and woke at 9:30 a.m., which wasn't bad.

I went out to smell the roses, and took pictures of them.  'Mme. Plantier' is starting to bloom.  A flower of 'Marchioness of Londonderry' is open.

I went to Barnes & Noble, and read Turnskin for another hour.  I had already decided I wanted to get it.  I didn't want to get it with DRM, though, so I got it from Weightless Books.  They let you get multiple formats.  I tried downloading it onto the Nook, but it didn't show up.  I tried sideloading it from the computer, but that didn't work either.  I was able to sideload it onto the Sony e-reader.  I've sideloaded plenty of other books onto the Nook, so I'm not sure what the issue was.  I may keep experimenting.  I'm sure it would have shown up if I'd gotten it as a Nook book.  The way I got it, I can't lend it, but I can recommend it.  I suppose it works for Nikki no matter what e-bookstore I got the book from.

I finished reading the book at home, on the Sony.  It's got two "races," "Shifters," who have fur and are shapeshifters, and "Skins," who have bare skin and can't change form.  The Shifters can shed their fur and impersonate Skins, or they can impersonate other Shifters.  Tom is a Shifter who wants to leave the rural area he lives in and go to the big city.

(*perhaps spoilers*)

One of the Shifter characters, Righteous, maintains a form that has "breasts in combination with an obvious trouser-bulge."  Tom finds this shocking.  Righteous and Tom share a room for a while, and Righteous writes down rules.  "First, the paper informed Tom, there is to be no use of gendered language in regard to Righteous.  Righteous is free of the pernicious gender constructs crippling society today.

"Second, there is to be no use of pejorative racial phrases of any kind...

"Righteous's room is a free love zone.  Old ideas of jealousy and exclusionary labels of sexuality are unwelcome.

"Righteous's room is a sanctuary against the dominant paradigm and the hierarchy that oppresses us.  Not just the Skin on Shifter oppression but Shifter on Shifter, gender on gender, and the subtle fascism of old knowledge subverting new and emergent revolutionary ideas."

Tom manages to get himself into all kinds of trouble.  When I was reading for an hour at a time, I was trying to stop in places where Tom wasn't in trouble, so I wouldn't be in suspense until the next day.
