I went to the AT&T store to see about upgrading my phone. The last time I'd talked to someone about getting a new phone, they said I was due for an upgrade in May. They didn't have any smartphones that had physical keyboards, or I would have gotten one with a keyboard. The choices that were 99 cents with a two-year contract were an iPhone 4 and a Pantech Flex. I went home and looked them up in Consumer Reports, CNET, and Mobile Tech. They didn't recommend the iPhone 4 because if you covered up the left side of the back of the phone with your hand, you wouldn't get reception. The reviewers said the Pantech Flex had an easy mode and a mode that was complex even for people who were familiar with Android.
I went back to the store and asked about the reception issue with the iPhone. The customer service people told me that that had been resolved. I decided to get the iPhone, so I suppose I'll find out. I was able to put Kindle, Nook and Kobo apps on it, so I have a fair number of books I can read. I could put music on it from iTunes, as well. It came with headphones. So I'll see how it works with calling people and getting calls, but I can read on it and listen to music.
I am not very good at using a touchscreen keyboard, but maybe I'll get better with practice. I have fourteen days to decide whether I want to keep the phone or not. J. loves his iPhone. He gave me his iPod when he got his iPhone. If I do decide to keep the phone, next time I see him I'll have him give me lessons.
I had asked TallCR if I could borrow Chase in Shadow. I had Dex in Blue, but I think it was Goodreads that said Chase in Shadow was the first in the series. I don't remember why I was looking up Amy Lane there, but my guess is that it was to mark the books I've hers I've read. I think Dex in Blue was a free promo at some point. That's how I got Litha's Constant Whim. TallCR sent me Chase in Shadow.
I had put a call in to S.M. to ask if she wanted to come see the roses. She said after the heat wave broke. It was quite hot today. Mom came home and complained that the air conditioner wasn't working. It's always ten degrees hotter upstairs than downstairs in the warmer months, so I hadn't noticed. She looked at the thermostat, and it said 80 degrees. Mom had Dad call to get the air conditioning repaired. I expect they work weekends. We'll find out.
S.M. and I made tentative plans for me to come over to her house Monday afternoon and help her download e-mail attachments that she couldn't download. I can't remember if it's PDF or Word documents that she has trouble downloading. I think sometimes it's both. I'll see on Monday.
Later: I went out to the roses briefly. 'Mme. Zoetmans' is in full bloom. The Jacobite rose has several flowers open. 'Ispahan' is starting to bloom. 'Fantin-Latour' has about half its flowers open.
It turned out that the air conditioning was in fact broken, but a repairman came out to fix it. He said there was a slow leak, and added refrigerant and dye, so he could see where the leak was when the dye leaked out. A couple of hours later, it was down to 75 degrees inside downstairs, but still probably over 80 upstairs.
I went out to get dinner. We had moo goo gai pan and shrimp with snow peas.
