more thoughts on soap opera

I didn't actually get around to watching last week's episodes of Alles Was Zahlt this weekend. (Edited to add: I wanted to watch them a second time before they went from "kostenlos" to having to pay for them.) I had watched them in the first place, and watched the Eskimo Kiss Project clips a few times. I'm watching the whole show regularly now, though I would understand more if it was in Latin. Seriously. I had a couple of years of Latin in high school. I had several years of French, so I suspect I'd be able to pick out a lot of French words if it was in French. Instead I am making do with my knowledge of German from reading twentieth century history, and knowing various words and phrases in Yiddish and Pennsylvania Dutch. I looked at my brother's German-language textbooks, but kind of gave up when the books said that all nouns were capitalized. The textbooks also took a fairly immersion approach to learning German, which I don't much appreciate in a textbook where I don't already have a good idea of what the words mean, like I did for Latin after I'd taken French. I could also figure out a lot of the Latin just from my English vocabulary.

German I've learned (pretty much phonetically spelled, and I have no idea what the articles are):

Raus=out (I knew that one before)

Kanne ano (phonetically spelled)=no idea (actually, "to have no idea" is given as "keine Ahnung haben" in the dictionary)

Idee=idea

Klar=sure, klar text=explain clearly, alles klar?=do you understand?

Egal=don't care one way or the other

Was ist los?=what's the matter?

Mann=also means "husband"

Hysterisch=hysterical

Hase=bunny

Welpe=puppy

Eis=ice

Eislaufen=ice-skating

Kalt=cold

Hier=here

Arbeiten=working

Kampf=fight

Kuss=kiss

Blume=flower

Rosa=pink

Rosmarin=rosemary

Roman=novel (pronounced a little differently from the character's name, apparently)

Schwul=gay

Vater=father

Mutter=mother

Bruder=brother

Schwester=sister

Schlaf=sleep

Madchen=girl

Junge=boy

Bad words:

Scheisse (spelled with that "B"-looking thing that substitutes for the English double "s.")

Arsch

Mist!=Damn it! (alternatively, Verdammt!)
