Sunday flowers

It's nice outside today.  I went out and looked at 'Duchesse de Brabant', which has one flower open and a lot of buds with their sepals down that should open in the next couple of days.  'Mme. Zoetmans' had a flower open.  It had another flower that had been eaten, but it has lots of buds.  I still think that has the best fragrance of any rose I have, though I have 'Mme. Isaac Pereire' this year, and that has yet to open a flower.  It will be close.  I like the fragrances of the alba roses, too, and 'Fantin-Latour', which is sometimes classed as a Centifolia and sometimes lately as a China hybrid.  China rose ancestry would explain a lot.  Unfortunately, it's not a repeat-bloomer, but it's still lovely.

Anyway, I'm excited about 'Mme. Zoetmans' blooming.  I took pictures of that flower and of the purple bearded iris, which has several flowers open.

Later: I went out again to smell the roses.  The buds of 'Mme. Isaac Pereire' are huge, and they're just showing color.  The flowers of its paler sport, 'Mme. Ernst Calvat', don't get that big, but 'Mme. Ernst Calvat' is in a pot.  It would probably get bigger if it was in the ground.  I expect that several more flowers of 'Mme. Zoetmans' will open in the next few days.
