and the roses

I picked a few roses to take to S.M.'s house and show her.  'Mme. Isaac Pereire' had a couple of little drooping blooms, but they still smelled sweet, so I cut one.  I picked flowers from 'Rosa Mundi', 'Maiden's Blush', 'Kazanlik', and a flower from those canes of 'Rosa Mundi' that had reverted back to the Apothecary's Rose.  I told her what they were.  I think she liked the fragrance of 'Maiden's Blush' the best out of the roses I brought.  I don't think the fragrances of the roses are at their best when it's so hot.  I think they're better when it's cooler and more misty or dewy out.  Also, it's strange, because 'Kazanlik', a.k.a. 'Trigintipetala', is the rose used to make attar of roses.  I don't think it has as nice a scent as some of the other summer damasks I have.  Well, although the once-blooming roses are going by, the Bourbon and Tea roses will repeat-bloom.  The white species rugosa has another bud.  I think the Tea roses will keep flowering all summer if they're happy.

S.M. showed me what she had in her garden, too, of course.  She's got vincas in various colors by the mailbox, and quite a number of things growing in the garden by the path to her front door.  The Asiatic lilies are in bud.  Her parsley survived, and she's got it planted with the marigolds in a pot.  I told her that something had eaten the parsley that I'd gotten, but that I'd planted the marigolds in the front yard, and some of them had survived.  I planted the couple of calendulas I got at the herb sale in among the marigolds, and they're blooming.  She had quite a few impatiens in pots on the front porch.
