Sunday real life

As noted in my previous post, I slept all day.  I have no idea how much later I'll be up tonight, but I have an appointment Monday at 11 a.m. that I need to get to.  I left for the house a couple of hours after waking up.  Dad was mowing the lawn.  After he was done the part of lawn he wanted to do, he helped me plant a rose.  It's 'Kronprinzessin Viktoria', the white sport of 'Souvenir de la Malmaison'.  I've tried growing 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' here a couple of times.  It's not hardy if you leave it in its original pot instead of planting it, but few roses are.  When it blooms, it's a beautiful flower with a wonderful fragrance.  I expect that 'Kronprinzessin Viktoria' will have a good scent, too.

I didn't even pretend that "Viktoria" would be hardy.  We planted it in a blue-and-white ceramic pot, which is not supposed to even be left out when it's freezing.  I may try to get "Viktoria" planted in the ground after its first flush of bloom and a pruning.  We'll see how it does when it's heavily mulched over the winter.  Who knows.  I think it's supposed to be as hardy as the average hybrid tea, at least.  Bourbons aren't as tender as Chinas.

I'm not going to pretend that the Tea roses I got will be hardy either.  I believe they'll be going in pots, as well.  They're smaller ones -- 'Isabella Sprunt', the yellow sport of 'Safrano'; 'Duchesse de Brabant', which I had before and loved; "Odee Pink"; and 'Maman Cochet'.  I'll just hope I get a greenhouse for Christmas, or maybe someone with a sunroom to overwinter them.  I think they'll all do all right in pots -- not the original pots, but larger ones -- for the summer and into the fall.

I'll see if I can get more planted Monday afternoon.
